What if your dreams aren’t just random night movies but glimpses into unseen realms, divine guidance, or even soul meetings across time and space?
From childhood tales of Prophet Yusuf’s star-prostrating dream to modern science’s REM cycles, dreams fascinate and terrify. We spend roughly six years of our lives dreaming stories unfolding in 15 to 90-minute bursts, every single night.
But in Islam, dreams are not just brain noise. They are a profound gift a remaining fragment of prophethood, a portal where souls travel, and a medium through which Allah sends glad tidings, warnings, and even glimpses of the Hereafter.
In Chapter 11: The Mysterious Realm of Dreams of Chronicles of Unknown, we explore this hidden world: Yusuf’s prophetic visions, the three types of dreams, the journey of souls in sleep, and protections against nightmares. The Quran meets neuroscience transforming how you see your nightly journeys.
Dreams: Divine Gift or Daily Deception?
Many dismiss dreams as “unreal.” But the Quran elevates them to a divine station. The very first major dream recorded in Scripture is Yusuf’s:
“O my father, indeed I saw eleven stars and the sun and the moon; I saw them prostrating to me.” (Surah Yusuf 12:4)
His father, Prophet Yaqub (A.S.), immediately recognized this was no ordinary nightmare or random firing of neurons. He said:
“And thus will your Lord choose you and teach you the interpretation of narratives (ta’wil al-ahadith) and complete His favor upon you…” (Surah Yusuf 12:6)
Popular Question Answered: Why Yusuf dream sun moon stars prostrating (Yusuf 12:4)?
The eleven stars represented his eleven brothers; the sun and moon were his father and mother. The dream prophesied his future rise to power in Egypt, where his entire family would bow before him not in worship, but in respect and fulfillment of Allah’s plan.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “True dreams are one forty-sixth part of prophethood” (Sahih Bukhari 6996). Why 46? Scholars explain: Prophethood lasted 23 years (13 in Mecca, 10 in Medina). True dreams were the first revelations to appear for 6 months before the first Quranic verses exactly 1/46th of 23 years.
Three Types of Dreams (Hadith, Bukhari 3292 & Muslim 2263):
- True dreams (Ru’ya) from Allah, usually good visions that come true.
- Satanic dreams (Hulm) frightening, confusing, or immoral images from Shaytan.
- Self-talk (Hadith an-nafs) replay of daily thoughts, worries, or desires.
The Prophet taught: If you see a good dream, praise Allah, share it only with loved ones. If a bad dream, spit left three times, seek refuge from Shaytan, turn over, and never tell anyone.
Yusuf’s Epic: From Pit to Palace
The dream faced a trial. Yusuf’s brothers grew jealous. They threw him into a well, sold him as a slave to Egypt, and lied to their father that a wolf had eaten him.
In Egypt, Yusuf was purchased by Al-Aziz (the King’s minister). He grew in wisdom and beauty. When the minister’s wife tried to seduce him, he refused and chose prison over sin.
In prison, he interpreted dreams of two fellow prisoners one would serve wine again, the other be crucified. Both came true.
Then came the King of Egypt’s dream (Surah Yusuf 12:43-49):
- Seven fat cows eaten by seven skinny cows.
- Seven green ears of grain and seven dry ones.
Yusuf’s interpretation: Seven years of abundant harvest, followed by seven years of severe famine. He advised storing grain during the good years.
The King released him and made him treasurer of Egypt. Yusuf managed the famine so brilliantly that people from surrounding lands including his own brothers came to buy grain.
Finally, the brothers came. Yusuf revealed himself. He forgave them. And then:
“And he raised his parents to the throne, and they fell down in prostration to him. And he said, ‘O my father, this is the interpretation of my dream of long ago. My Lord has made it true.'” (Surah Yusuf 12:100)
The dream fulfilled after forty years.
Yusuf’s beautiful prayer at the end of Surah Yusuf (12:101) is a model for all believers:
“My Lord, You have given me sovereignty and taught me the interpretation of narratives. Creator of the heavens and the earth, You are my Protector in this world and the Hereafter. Take my soul as a Muslim and join me with the righteous.”
Archaeology Connection: The Bahr Yusuf (Canal of Joseph) still exists in Egypt’s Fayoum region. Built during the Middle Kingdom (around 1900 BCE, matching Yusuf’s era under the Hyksos or Amenemhat dynasties), it transforms desert into farmland. Local tradition says Yusuf dug it in 1,000 days to store grain during famine. Satellite imagery shows its ancient course.
Souls in Sleep: Where Do They Go?
The Quran makes a stunning claim about sleep:
“Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die [He takes] during their sleep. Then He keeps those for whom He has decreed death and releases the others until a specified term.” (Surah Az-Zumar 39:42)
Popular Question Answered: Souls sleep where go Quranic view?
During sleep, the soul is partially lifted from the body. It meets other souls in a realm called Barzakh al-Sughra (minor barrier). Believers’ souls can visit each other, seek knowledge, or even meet the Prophet (peace be upon him). When you wake, the soul returns unless Allah has decreed death.
The Hadith (Musnad Ahmad 3033) states: “When a believer goes to sleep, his soul ascends to the heavens”
This explains why dreams are free from time and space past and future blend. You can see someone across the world, meet a deceased relative, or experience events that haven’t happened yet. The soul, while partially released, accesses realms beyond physical limitations.
Lucid Dreams & Science: Dr. Stephen LaBerge at Stanford proved lucid dreaming (awareness within a dream) using eye-movement signals. Sleepers could consciously move their eyes left-right in the dream, which appeared on monitors. Science confirms: you can be awake inside a dream. Islam would say that’s the soul’s awareness dominating over the body’s paralysis.
Famous Inventions That Came in Dreams
Popular Question Answered: Famous inventions discoveries dreams (Bohr Mendeleev)?
- Niels Bohr (atomic structure) dreamed of nuclei as a solar system with electrons orbiting like planets.
- Dmitri Mendeleev (periodic table) saw all elements arranged in a table in his dream.
- Mary Shelley (Frankenstein) a waking dream of a pale student assembling a creature.
- Elias Howe (sewing machine) dreamed of being speared by cannibals with needle-shaped spears having eye-holes at the tip.
These are not “random” they are glimpses of ilm al-ladunni (knowledge from Allah) granted in sleep.
Seeing the Prophet ﷺ in a Dream
Popular Question Answered: Can we see Prophet Muhammad true form dream?
The Prophet said: “Whoever sees me in a dream has truly seen me, for Shaytan cannot imitate my form.” (Sahih Bukhari 6994)
This is a unique privilege of the Ummah. Seeing the Prophet in a dream in his real appearance, not a distorted image is a true vision. It brings immense blessing and should be shared.
Adhan in a Dream: The famous story of Umar and Abdullah ibn Zayd (Abu Dawud, authenticated by Ibn Hibban). Abdullah saw the Adhan (call to prayer) in a dream. He told the Prophet, who said: “It is a true dream.” The Prophet then commanded Bilal to use those words. Thus, the Adhan came from a dream.
Popular Question Answered: Adhan words dream Umar Abdullah Zayd?
Yes. Abdullah ibn Zayd saw the exact wording of the Adhan in a dream. Umar later said he had seen the same dream but Abdullah had already told the Prophet first.
Protecting Your Dreams: Islamic Practices
